On the Magnetic Field in Quasar and FR II Large-Scale Jets

چکیده
Here we report systematic comparison of the spectral properties of large-scale jets, hotspots and extended lobes in quasars and FR II radio galaxies recently observed with Chandra and ASCA. We argue that if the strong X-ray emission of the jet knots in these objects results from comptonisation of the CMB photons, as usually considered, the powerful large-scale jets are most likely far from the minimum-power condition in the sense that the magnetic field thereby is below equipartition. We also show that the X-ray emission of the hot-spots and lobes in the compiled dataset agrees with the minimum-power condition. In this context, we point out the need for substantial amplification of the magnetic field within the terminal shocks of powerful large-scale jets of quasars and FR II sources.

The Phoenix Fire Model for Jet Creation: The Role of Magnetic Fields in the Production and Propagation of Relativistic Jets
Using recent observational and theoretical results, I outline the latest ideas on how relativistic jets are produced by rotating magnetic fields, along with the physical processes that result in the FR I/II dichotomy. Simply put, at the end of the acceleration and collimation phase the now super-magnetosonic jet (the “Phoenix”) passes through a master recollimation shock (the “fire”) and is reb...
متن کاملOn the Magnetic Field in Kpc - Scale Jets of FR I Radio
The energy content of large-scale jets in FR I radio galaxies is still an open issue. Here we show that upper limits on the high-energy and very high-energy γ-ray emission of the kpc-scale jet in M 87 radio galaxy imposed by EGRET, Whipple, and — most importantly — HEGRA and HESS observations, provide important constraints on the magnetic field strength in this object. In particular, a non-dete...
متن کاملA Chandra Survey of Quasar Jets: First Results
We present results from Chandra X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of a flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like extended structure. Twelve of twenty quasar jets are detected in 5 ks ACIS-S exposures. The quasars without X-ray jets are not significantly different from those in the sample with detected jets except that the extended radio emission is generally fainter...
متن کاملWhat determines the properties of the X-ray jets in FR-I radio galaxies?
We present the first large sample investigation of the properties of jets in Fanaroff and Riley type I radio galaxies (FR-I) based on data from the Chandra archive. We explore relations between the properties of the jets and the properties of host galaxies in which they reside. We find previously unknown correlations to exist, relating photon index, volume emissivity, jet volume and luminosity,...
متن کاملThe Optically-powerful Quasar E1821+643 Is Associated with a 300-kpc Scale Fr I Radio Structure
We present a deep image of the optically-powerful quasar E 1821+643 at 18 cm made with the Very Large Array (VLA). This image reveals radio emission, over 280h kpc in extent, elongated way beyond the quasar’s host galaxy. Its radio structure has decreasing surface brightness with increasing distance from the bright core, characteristic of FR I sources (Fanaroff & Riley 1974). Its radio luminosi...
